Kaleidoscope: A Unique Restaurant Design by HomeCheer Interior Design Company

Winner of the Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2021

The inspiration for the Kaleidoscope design comes from the geometric patterns of a kaleidoscope. The facade of the restaurant is presented with irregular geometric figures, using walnut veneer and laminate hard plastic sheet with architectural concrete pattern. The design team has also drawn a painting on the wall, implying that the proprietor is a great warrior, holding a wine bottle and creating his own world.

What makes this design unique is the clever use of space and materials. The original project was an old metal house with three steel columns that could not be removed. The design team cleverly hid these columns with an arc design, which also echoes the kaleidoscope design of the facade. The back wall of the restaurant is made of stone peel and stick tile, and the eye-catching neon sign in Ukiyo-e style adds to the overall aesthetic.

The realization of this design was achieved using eco-friendly Lotos plaster on the walls and ceiling, creating irregular lines with a trowel finish. The restaurant covers a space of 200 square meters, and the design was completed in October 2020 in Taipei, Taiwan.

The design team faced several challenges during the project. For example, in the booth for eight on the left, hound-tooth wall fabric was applied on the wall, with the middle part left blank, to visually extend and enlarge the space. In the bar area, black walnut was used to create an irregular geometry design, with a black background and a backlit logo.

The design team also conducted research to ensure the safety and aesthetic appeal of the design. A solid wood grille was installed on the second floor, and the lighting going through the grille onto the blue wall fabric created a highly aesthetic atmosphere. The main wall is adorned with a Ukiyo-e painting of beauties to embellish the space.
